Anxiety

Many patients present with anxiety and this can present in a variety of ways.

There are positive research findings for treating chronic anxiety associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, substance misuse, eating disorders, insomnia) and various other conditions.

How acupuncture can help anxiety:

It is believed that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and causes the release of neurochemical messenger molecules. The resulting biochemical changes influences the body’s homeostatic mechanisms, thereby promoting physical and emotional well-being. Research has shown that acupuncture treatment may specifically benefit anxiety disorders and symptoms of anxiety as it:

Acts on areas of the brain known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, promotes relaxation and deactivates the part of the brain responsible for anxiety and worry

Regulates levels of neurotransmitters and hormones, altering the brain's mood chemistry to help to counteract negative states

Stimulates the modulation of the autonomic nervous system. Stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, while acupuncture can activate the opposing parasympathetic nervous system, initiating the relaxation response

Reverses changes in levels of inflammatory cytokines associated with anxiety

Reverses stress-induced changes in behaviour and biochemistry.

Acupuncture can be safely combined with conventional treatments such as medication or therapy, possibly improving their effects and reducing side-effects.
